I know the 12 piece gets all the love, but for the very young, it's a bit too large and overwhelming. Enter the 6 piece. We bought this in conjuction with the Grimms mosaic block set as an introduction to open ending building play for our 20 month old, and it was an instant hit! I chose the pastel because the regular rainbow version was out of stock at the time, but I really don't regret it. These toys are so beautifully made, and they really do catch a young child's attention. My daughter's limited in what she is able to do with it without help from a grown up, but as I sit with her and make things out of it, and show her how cars can go through, or how we can make simple ball runs, or animals or peg people can sit under and over, I can see how it opens up her imagination. That's where this toy really shines - - it's how you incorporate all your child's other beloved toys into the play. I'm sure we'll upgrade to the 12 piece at some point, but I'm so happy to have bought this one as well. I would recommend this without hesitation for any baby or toddler. Older than that and I think you might as well spring for the 12 piece.
